This short video really captures my philosophy of teaching about drum set playing. Here at grooveKSQ I don’t just train drummers and percussionists, I train musicians. There is a massive difference. While of course there is an emphasis on the technical aspects of playing the instrument - posture, grip, mechanics - the ultimate lessons deal with what the student is creating on the instrument. How does the performance serve the song or composition? What kind of experience is the performer creating for the audience? These are the overarching questions that are discussed here every week.
So while me and my student Finley and working through a half time shuffle, and focusing on how the hi-hat hand physically approaches the cymbal, and how heavy the bass and snare need to be here - the last sentence you hear in this video clip says it all: Now it is starting to sound like a song.
Students of all ages study here at grooveKSQ. If you are interested in elevating your playing, contact me.
