Djembe Master Class Recap

One of the truly rewarding things about the studio is creating experiences that connect people who would otherwise never would have met. This is often what happens at our djembe master classes, which are hosted at grooveKSQ and facilitated by djembe master Pape Demba Samb.

Also, these events are FUN! Consider the exchange at the beginning of the video:

Pape: When I see Ed solo, he laughs.....why?

Ed: Because it's fun!

Exactly.

The djembe classes are a monthly occurrence, if you want to stay in the loop, text GROOVEKSQ to 66866 on your smartphone to join our email list.

Our next djembe master class is coming up Thursday, October 27th 7:30pm. Click the button below to reserve your seat.

The Studio is Growing!

Thank you very much for your support. The studio would not be what has become without you.

In November 2018, this percussion studio was a true start up. It has now become a full time business with student members of all different ages and ability levels.

On September 1, 2022, I am opening a second studio location: groove Oxford Arts Alliance.

I am looking forward to bringing the same high quality instruction on drum set, rudimental, hand drumming, marimba, electronic percussion and content creation, recording and media production to the Oxford Arts Alliance.

Drumming Provides Relief from Stress and Anxiety - Anecdotal and Clinical Proof

One of the purposes of the July Practice Challenge was to accentuate the stress management/relaxation aspects of drumming.

A while back I posted a piece called: This is Your Brain on Drums: Clinical Study Reveals How Playing Drums Increases Brain Development. It’s worth a look when you have some time. Today, I saw this study from the Royal College of Music in London, UK which supports the theory that group drumming decreases anxiety, depression and increases social resilience and inflammatory immune response. There’s a lot packed into that last sentence - reread that one!

The study put study participants in group drumming classes for 6 and 10 week courses. Here is a summary of the study’s findings:

In conclusion, this study demonstrates that group drumming can reduce depression and anxiety and improve social resilience in mental health service users over a 6- and 10-week spans. Changes in psychological profiles were found in parallel with reductions in inflammatory response and a shift towards an anti-inflammatory immune profile, in keeping with other successful mental health interventions.
