Announcing the grooveKSQ Spotify Playlist

There is an overabundance of choice out there when it comes to new music. That makes things tough when you are trying to find music of substance, that rewards each subsequent listen. We started the grooveKSQ Spotify playlist to highlight some historic performances that every percussionist should know about, and hopefully you discover something brand new to you that you love….

Thinking Ahead...

It’s never been easy for me to stand still.

So over the years, vacations have turned into time that I can spend planning.

When I was looking at the waves this week, I spent some time reflecting on the fact that grooveKSQ started in earnest around this time last year.  The time has gone very quickly.

While groove’s first birthday isn’t really until November 1, when we opened our doors, I can now look back on the development of the business and see new opportunities for programming in 2019 and 2020.

Another series of grooveLIVE streams featuring great acoustic musicians from the area.

More private lessons.

More public performance events for students.

More partnerships with the Kennett Community and beyond.

MUCH more content creation.

In other words, there’s much more to do.

If you love music, and live performance, and want high quality experiences, come along with me for the ride.

There are a lot of ways to become part of the groove community.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Product Spotlight: Woodland Percussion Gong Drum!

One of the things we enjoy doing here at groove is turning young drummers into GREAT drummers and GREAT musicians.

One of the other things we really dig is spotlighting new or unusual instruments that you don't often get to see, like today.

The good people at Woodland Percussion were nice enough to loan us a 20" x 14" gong drum to review, and it was a BLAST to play. For more information about Woodland Percussion, click here.

Student Recital Video: Tommy M plays 12/8 Rolls

One things that grooveKSQ students will learn is a lot of rudimental drumming and technique, as that informs almost every other musical drumming style. In this video, we see student Tommy M, who is playing a 12/8 rolls exercise at a high level.

Supporting grooveKSQ Just Got Easier!

We have been working hard behind the scenes to build grooveKSQ into a community partner that will provide percussion and arts education programming and performances for a long time to come. Our ability to do that, however, depends on financial support from the community, in addition to revenue generated from teaching individual and group lessons.

Finally, we can announce that grooveKSQ has entered into a fiscal sponsorship agreement with Fractured Atlas, which is one of the largest non-profit support organizations in the United States. What that means to you is that you can now make donations to grooveKSQ that are fully tax deductible.

Below is a video detailing our mission statement. Please take a look and then consider making a tax deductible donation to grooveKSQ. Many, many thanks for your support!!

Use your talents everyday.

Drumming is a lot like life...

Drumming is a lot like life. You can't bash your way through it all the time. Sometimes (rarely) you have to, but mostly, I find subtlety to be FAR more effective. With drumming, and music also, when you are playing full out all the time, the listener will grow bored very quickly. Music is like conversation, sometimes you yell, sometimes you whisper. The peaks and valleys are what make the trip interesting.

So one of the areas of focus for my more advanced students is dynamic control. Playing a tough passage at forte (loudly) is great….but can you play the same passage with the same intensity and performance level at mezzo piano? That’s one of the overarching goals here: total command of your dynamic abilities, and the pursuit of playing with total control. Control is what separates the elite players from everyone else.

Studying at grooveKSQ is about much more than drumming. There are a few lesson slots open now available. Email me at bryan@grooveksq.com for details.
