My friends, we have talked about this month’s transcription challenge in our lessons, and now finally, here is the answer key below. We will do another one of these in December.
Wednesday Throwdown November 11th
If you missed today’s livestream, you can view it below:
Transcription Challenge #1
For those who told me you wanted to work on your transcription skills, here you go:
Time signature = 4/4. The first note is the downbeat of beat 1, measure 1. There are 8 measures total.
These will get more challenging as we go along.
Assignment: transcribe this, send me a picture or scan of your transcription and I'll reveal the correct answer online this Friday (11/6/2020).
Student Video: Thomas L.
Here at groove, we use video a lot, because it is the single best tool for self analysis. Check out this play through video from Thomas L, covering “Rosanna” by Toto. This is a difficult song to play from both a technical standpoint and a feel standpoint, and takes a long time to get under control.
grooveTALK, Ep.1: Michael Hall, Conductor Kennett Symphony
Kennett Symphony conductor Michael Hall joins Bryan to discuss his thoughts on being a professional musician, good work/rehearsal habits, and a bit of drumming talk as well.

Student Spotlight: David R.
Congratulations are in order to David R, who has been prepping for his University jazz program audition here at grooveKSQ. As one progresses through high school and into the college and university ranks, the material gets tougher in all subjects. This is also true with music schools and the audition process gets more and more competitive as well at the university level.
So, those going through University auditions know that they have two challenges: 1) harder audition material, plus 2) more competition. The audition material David had to navigate was some serious stuff.
David worked hard to prep all the audition material here at groove and once he was ready, we filmed and recorded his audition video here at the studio.
Again, we see that hard work pays off.
David was accepted into the jazz program and University of Delaware for this Fall semester. Congrats, David!!
